I'm in Utah today to cover the Mia Love-Ben McAdams battle for a very important congressional seat. Love is the only Black woman Republican in congress, and she faces a challenge from popular local mayor who is trying to tie her to the president.https://nyti.ms/2O81w5j
“I can’t wait to put all of this behind us,” the congresswoman told me.
It's been a challenging few months for Mia Love. While her opponent has tried to tie her to Trump—who is not particularly popular in Utah—the president has begun saying he will nullify birthright citizenship. This is the constitutional guarantee that makes Rep. Love an American.
Our interview became unexpectedly emotional when I asked about this.
"I’m a daughter of immigrants,” she said. “Saying that means I wouldn’t be a U.S. citizen...These are the types of things that you sit there and you have to call [the president] out on it and say: Look, this is not who we are.”
The race is going to be close. In 2012, Mia Love lost her first bid for this seat by fewer than 800 votes.
There is a very good chance we WON'T know the result of the Love-McAdams race by the end of the night, and Rep. Love admitted as much when we met yesterday.
