I was the cake baker’s shop today, and fans and foes had stopped by to offer their thoughts.
The shop was locked because Jack was in New York. A sign sat on the table just beyond a window: “When I understand that everything happening to me is to make me more Christ-like,” it read, “it resolves a great deal of anxiety.”
Among the visitors was a couple who said they identified strongly with the cake baker. “I think the movement is a good thing,” said Ray Lapsys, a Catholic, of gay rights, “the bad thing is that they’ve forced us to go with the movement.”
But in nation that has moved so far in the direction of gay rights in recent years, it’s not clear if Jack the baker’s victory would mean much for long. And some of his supporters voiced that concern.
“It’s a win for freedom,” Ray told me, speaking of the Supreme Court decision. His wife doubted it would last. “We’re praying for that very strongly,” said Raminta Lapsys. “But I don’t think so. Satan is strong, and the devil is out there.”
