I have been an outspoken advocate of removing conf monuments, and I don’t believe the history defense there. This seems different. I don’t think they should come down when they are among the portraits of every other Speaker.

In this instance, there is actual validity for keeping the portraits there. I think a meaningful educational opportunity was missed in favor of posturing with this one. It would have been far better to keep them there, but add explanatory plaques underneath.

For the record, the statues *should* come down — they’re a narrative of history, not history.

One could imagine how an artist and a historian could work out something that makes absolutely clear we are *not* *honoring* these guys, but being clear about history. For example, a B&W photo of the original paintings, smaller than the rest, with an explanatory plaque. my 2¢
