Honestly, this is the case in virtually every sector (law, medicine, finance, etc) in which ability to work all the time determines advancement. Unless the other parent is willing to pick up the slack, either work or parenting time must win out. Very hard to do equally.

I agree (and I was lucky to work for an employer who let me take all of my accured time off as paternity leave). But I think it's highly worthwhile to highlight individual industries (in this case, my own) to help flesh out the broader picture.

It sucks that working moms in news media aren't looked at with the same lens as other working moms, simply because their work isn't seen as openly as other careers. News moms, you rock! Keep bringing us the truth!

The wire service life isn’t great for moms either. I personally have left a frightened, weepy child home alone because school opened late (snow) but I had to be at work. And the band concerts I missed because of late stories. The list is long.

I have friends whom the Mom is a teacher and the Dad is an accountant. She “gets” two weeks to stay at home with their newborn, and she is unpaid. He has six months paid leave. It doesn’t matter what gender you are, all new parents/partners should have paid and equal time.
