OK. We disagree. When a person in power makes a claim that is both false and outside the realm of law, what journalists should NOT do is accept that premise as true. Doing so only makes the reporter a party to the original lie.
I think we do disagree. If a president makes a threat, or says things that suggest he is ready to take actions outside the law, reporters need to determine whether he intends to do so. Can also challenge his premise. But failing to do the 1st is not doing the job.
Alternative approach: how about reporters respond to outlandishly unconstitutional or far fetched proposals by asking how they could justify acting accordingly ... rather than if they will act accordingly?
It’s also fine to ask if he understands that what he is suggesting is illegal. Seems like his answer to that would be pretty newsworthy! But what do I know I don’t come on twitter to be snarky about my failure as a journalist to hold powerful people in check.
Surely, and it's appreciated. But maybe question him in a way that doesn't suggest it's business as usual when it's an off the rocker provocation? I'm not a reporter, but it drives me nuts when his outlandish suggestions, claims and remarks are normalized in the tone of follow up
