Perhaps when doing "follow-ups," don't accept an outlandishly false claim as true. Instead, start by calling out the false claim, and then make him defend it? It might end up in less gas-lighting from BOTH the President and the press.
Maybe, & I wasn't there, so dunno exactly how this was worded, but if a person in power suggests that a certain action be taken, however far-fetched or false the premise, I think it's the obligation of reporters w access to that person to ask whether he's going to act accordingly
what we really need is more journalists egging on the President with suggestions of unconstitutional actions he can take, the responses to which they then uncritically transcribe and repeat
With respect Julie, I think the concern is asking questions in a manner that risks reinforcing erosion of Democratic practices norms and institutions . Why not ask it as how is what you are saying consistent with our constitution and small d democratic practice?
When the follow-ups only serve to encourage the authoritarian instincts of the president of the United States, no.
Follow up questions are certainly appropriate. However, some reporters utilize a style of questioning that appears to be baiting him or egging him on in the interest of a sound bite, rather than seeking clarity.
This! Some of his worst ideas come from a reporter asking him a leading question.
or, "On what legal basis would you do that?" Pretty easy to communicate even among ourselves without the tinfoil battlegear, isn't it?
Julie the frustrating thing to me is that it seems like people can push ideas into his head just by asking about it. Also frustrating is when they leave out any challenge, even mild. The justice dept doesn’t serve Trump, it serves the country.
No, these are scenarios that he'd already brought up or alluded to, either directly or via Sanders. Anybody familiar with his past M.O. can surmise that his instincts tell him to go that route. Those Q's need to be asked to document and quote. It's called 'reporting' for a reason
