Folks, I get the objections to what appears to be an after-fact revocation of an on-record agreement w Miller, but understand that @shearm & I never requested a podcast interview or permission to use audio. /1

As many hundreds, probably thousands, have said - if you can't release the audio, you can certainly release a complete transcript.

Julie, as a former reporter, I’d say that absent an apriori agreement *not* to broadcast the tape (and presuming Miller knew he was being recorded), you’d absolutely be within ethical bounds to air it.
-
You were a reporter for TV/radio, though, right? Rules and expectations are different for print.

Wish you hadn't left unchallenged Miller's statements about undocumented immigrants "separating" Americans from their family by killing them. Could've noted, eg, that immigrants commit crimes at a lower rate than native-born Americans, or that it's a racist/nativist non-sequitur.
-
With this WH it's dangerous to quote what officials say without adding context. Miller is likely happy; the NYT reported that he said immigrants kill Americans, and neither you nor
@mikiebarb refuted it. Why? Journalists covering this WH should not simply repeat the lie.

You spoke for him actually. You did a great job. That’s the problem. You communicated his message better than he could have and you didn’t push back at all. Maybe you did but without the transcript we’ll never know

I respect your journalistic standards but what you did was use your voice to repeat what Miller told you. Why not let him make his own arguments especially if they are on tape. If we've learned anything in the past 24hrs it's the power of hearing something versus reading it.
-
If Miller wants to defend why this is the correct policy, that's his job. By agreeing to not play the recording you allowed the WH to make it your job.

It often seems like the WH is setting the terms of engagement for every single media encounter and that doesn't feel either good or necessary, from a reader's perspective. You're playing by Queensbury rules while they slap you upside the head with a folding chair.

Release the tape. No need to play fair with fascists.
