Is this the last chance for Madagascar’s biodiversity? We have come together to argue that President Rajoelina’s term in office is critical to avoid a point of no return, & make positive suggestions of what needs to change (1/13)

When started her PhD and wanted to use ODK to collect her data on smart phones, I was super skeptical (no electricity, no connection to cloud, endless damp ...). She insisted she could make it work. Here is how (and why) she did it.

I don't get what people have against Welsh. I live in a community where speaking welsh fluently would add real richness to life. But London based commentators act like the language is a joke & a silly backward thing which silly Welsh councils waste money on translating road signs

Feels like a bleak day, and far too late for “cheer up, it might never happen.” But still, I found this comforting:

Madagascar's new minister for environment & rural development is superbly qualified. She has a PhD in environmental economics focused on biodiversity/market mechanisms/poverty. is clearly serious about choosing the best people to solve important issues.

Madagascar has a new government. This includes a new minister for environment & rural development: Baomiavotse Vahinala Raharinirina. I found her PhD online. She has a doctorate in the area of her brief (this is very unusual in UK). Great news.

I was on a nerc panel C (ecology) discussing proposals. Everytime I talked up an application as particularly useful/ important I was reminded 'this is a DISCOVERY panel'. Yes but surely that doesn't mean we can't discover something important. Felt like 'applied' was a dirty word.

Could have shown how they came to a decision transparently using a tool like this: We want to get decision-makers formalising how they put evidence, values, costs and experience to reach a decision. The challenge is to make this rapid and easy to use...
