Anyway, have a great night. Pretty cosy here in starless Berlin - bottle of posh wine, fine vegan eats, a couple glowing rectangles, etc

Viruses will always seem scarier than mass extinction & warming because we're social animals whose politics of proximity writes the book we read each day, stories told in cities lost to the truth we're all bound to a fragile life-support hurtling through the indifference of space

Unintended consequence of the Fukushima disaster: Japan closed nuclear power plants, and now plans to build as many as 22 new coal-burning plants at a time when the world needs to slash carbon dioxide emissions to fight climate change.

Forgot to mention this. Check it out at the HKW Berlin, on show now. The rig is truly a (mini) supercomputer, running 144 CPU cores (about 36 powerful laptops), crunching the same CESM tooling most scientific agencies use to generate models best-guessing our planetary future(s)

The good news is that today's tech art about ecocide is as uncool as 'surveillance art' was a couple years before Snowden burst the digital love bubble, when curators that later went on to dedicate years to shows on the topic would say "but we don't want to scare our audience"

I'd like to make more art about the climate and ecological emergency but reading today's news it does feel a bit like chairing a panel on 'the cultural histories of arson' while a lunatic in a suit splashes petrol over the audience

Here's that self-reinforcing feedback in numbers: the fires push us up 2.74ppm, 2% atop the 2019 average. This is akin to the entire airline industry's output for a year, in one burn

ICYMI Spain has declared a national this week. 👏 We want governments to act together and start solving this NOW. Join the rebellion:

For those that didn't catch it, here's a recent lecture where I cover some of what I've been up to lately: (from a little after 20 minutes I get into the nuts-and-bytes)

Apology to all those fine ppl that've reached out the last f̶e̶w̶ ̶m̶o̶n̶t̶h̶s̶ year wanting to get in touch, only to have been met with 64bit tumbleweed. Been in a sprawling rabbit hole of servers/infosec/opsec/mass-mobilisation. Learned so much. Looking at ways to share it all

There's a direct link between climate change and not doing anything about climate change.

Wonder where greenhouse gases come from? Here are two plots I put together showing the major sources, and the different activities that create them. It's based on global emissions inventories reported in the IPCC Third Working Group, 5th Assessment. What surprises you most?

This isn't just 'Australia' burning, so much as our shared literal habitat in space, the only habitat we have, whose thin atmosphere we all share. It is a reminder we've got nowhere else to go. If ever there was a final fight, this is it. This is the decade to rise up

Coal seams in the Blue Mountains caught fire today, so it’s gone beyond the biomass above ground and into the geological layers beneath the ground.

And insane amounts of CO2 back into the atmosphere - gigatons from millions of burning trees, the work of countless living carbon structures undone. This is a self-reinforcing feedback at work. Every warming prediction model is conservative, none are prepared for this

Perhaps obvious, but there'll also be a boom in the practical/applied/DIY craft arts, urban and rural permaculture and in the right-to-repair movement. As for the latter, here's a good talk from the last week 'Degrowth is Coming - Be Ready to Repair'
