The debate began in Feb., when Bill Gates tweeted about the dramatic decline in global poverty & anthropologist Jason Hickel wrote a scathing response in the Guardian. Dylan wrote a great analysis of the debate which I've been thinking about ever since:https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2019/2/12/18215534/bill-gates-global-poverty-chart …

One of the frames we use to analyze the global poverty debate is "conflict theory" vs. "mistake theory," a divide pointed out by

To simplify: - Mistake theorists see global poverty as an engineering problem being solved - Conflict theorists see global poverty as the result of wealthy institutions keeping poor people down for their gain And that colors discussions over empirical facts about poverty. Another lens through which we discuss the debate is
@everytstudies's idea of "decouplers" vs. "non-decouplers", which I discussed in my recent podcast episode with him. Here's an essay he wrote explaining that divide and how it makes disagreements tricky:https://everythingstudies.com/2018/05/25/decoupling-revisited/ …Show this thread

Listened to it this morning! Off the last episodes, I thought it'd be interesanting to invite one of these couplers for them to steelman it. It seems to me decouplers are the ones going about explaining, and understanding both views, while couplers are more limited

To the point where successful coupling is usually be people who do it on purpose, for rhetorical purposes, people who elsewhere are mostly decoupling around.

Capitalism may produce wealth, but it also produces wealth inequality. I agree with you that we have to be better advocates for the dispossessed. For better outcomes I'd suggest we adopt some ideas from democratic socialism.

I wanna listen but I also think Hickel's argument is so boneheaded that it's not worth my time to consider. Kind of like listening to a creationist, like it's a waste of my time to engage in such a stupid debate when many interesting and puzzling questions are out there.

I'd just watched your video explaining the repugnant conclusion a few days ago, so I really loved the discussion of it near the end! The way you linked it to factory farming and then to global poverty to highlight a possible inconsistency was super interesting
