    I watched present his work when I was a first-year PhD student, and it set the agenda for the kind of research I wanted to do. This is most definitely worth watching.

    In 1995, the Great Chicago Heat Wave killed 739 people. Hundreds died home, alone, in the city's most vulnerable neighborhoods. Hardly anyone outside Chicago remembers. Why? Tonight, on explores. It's an incredible story.

    In honor of my not-on-twitter sister, who is an ecologist and botanist and has said much the same to me. Middle-range theories and close observation are so important, and they are disappearing from many fields. (They also run in the family, apparently.)

    As Friedman... explained... there is molecular biology... and global ecology... The area in the middle is all about how a plant grows; that is disappearing from most university curricula and we need this information because things are changing really fast.

    Indeed. Also date of birth, marital status, and number of children are considered privileged information in the US (and I presume Canada) and should definitely NOT appear on CVs submitted for positions here.

    Awkward to receive CVs for job applications featuring the candidates' picture. I know it's a common practice in other parts of the world but it looks a bit strange when you do this while applying for a job in the US or in Canada :-)

    Steyer & Bloomberg have spent a collective ~$400M of their own money on their campaigns so far. Can you imagine the sea change if Black-led orgs had that kind of capital to devote to political education, voting rights work, voter mobilization & political infrastructure building?

    Appx 27% of Econ Phds from top 10 programs are women, vs. 33% from all programs. Top 10s hiring PhDs from top 10s contributes to women's underrepresentation on faculty of top 10. A self-reinforcing cycle of inequality.

    Just how insular is the mainstream economics discipline? One obvious way to look at this is by examining faculty hiring at top-ranked departments. This chart shows where faculty members in the top 10 departments got their PhDs. Here's a thread with some of the key takeaways.  1/

    There is no way I would have been able to caucus with my kids. The caucus is blatantly discriminatory against parents -- but especially single parents, those who work night shifts (or whose partners do), and parents of kids with disabilities who can't easily be left with sitters

    Important. We've known for over 40 years that learners w/ backgrounds in the humanities come to med school w/ greater tolerance for subjectivity & ambiguity -- crucial skills 4 clinical practice. Overwhelmingly, admissions still select learners w/ bckgrounds in hard & life sci.
