In this interview Mirembe B. A group of former Pan Am stewardesses who call themselves the “Blackbirds” have told their stories already. Here’s one from

There are few first-person accounts of the experiences of Black stewardesses during the Jet Age era that my book “Come Fly the World” focuses on. Those that are out there deserve attention—they helped me understand the story of Hazel Bowie, which I tell in this except.https://twitter.com/lithub/status/1366787951670231040 …

The application process and training required these women to fit a particular physical profile, speak multiple languages, and operate like foreign service officers, sensitive to a wide range of cultures and sensibilities.

What I found was a treasure trove of stories about the women who didn’t just uphold the glamorous image of Pan Am, but who really acted as diplomats, interacting with international politicians and helping to transport American soldiers.

The book examines everything about Pan Am and its work culture, from flight routes, employee manuals, to the airline’s involvement in the Vietnam War—and more importantly, the stewardesses who made it all happen.
