Elizabeth Warren is now running FB ads with a false statement about Mark Zuckerberg and FB endorsing Trump for president, to draw attention to FB's controversial policy allowing politicians to make false statements in ads. https://www.cnn.com/2019/10/11/politics/elizabeth-warren-facebook-ad/index.html …pic.twitter.com/6zsPwXESKR

I wrote about Facebook's decision to let politicians lie in advertisements – and what it reveals about the company's and Mark Zuckerberg's basic political programming – here:https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/oct/10/facebook-trump-politics-technology-zuckerberg …

For her next act, @ewarren should run an ad with Courbet’s L’origine du monde or the Venus of Willendorfhttps://twitter.com/fbnewsroom/status/1183162508846215168?s=21 …

@ewarren looks like broadcast stations across the country have aired this ad nearly 1,000 times, as required by law. FCC doesn’t want broadcast companies censoring candidates’ speech. We agree it’s better to let voters—not companies—decide. #FCC #candidateuse https://twitter.com/AdImpact_Pol/status/1183158974700544005 …

Unless and until there are laws to relegate it, Facebook can do what it wants on political lies. But please do not let this company lay claim to a moral high ground on free expression when it is probably the largest censor in the world.

Facebook has aggressively enforced censorship of adult women’s bodies from the beginning, despite no one being hurt by consensual nudity or menstruation. Meanwhile it had to be dragged kicking and screaming into censoring white nationalism, hate speech & anti-vaccine propaganda

The question with Facebook has never been “should it censor?” because it always has censored. The question is, will its censorship be oriented toward protecting the powerful or the powerless?

Once again for those who missed this: Facebook *did* censor Trump’s false Biden ads, for saying “son of a bitch” without bleeping it. Why does Facebook’s fundamental belief in free expression privilege the right of a politician to lie but not to swear?https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/oct/10/facebook-trump-politics-technology-zuckerberg?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other …

And if you are interested in a conversation about social media censorship that goes beyond the knee jerk “slippery slope” defense, I laid out a handful of complicated but pressing cases here:https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/jul/10/trump-social-media-summit-alternate-list?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other …

One other point on this, but if Facebook wants to voluntarily follow FCC regulations on political advertising, how is it going to comply with the equal time requirement? Will FB show every American an equal amount of organic content from candidates? How?https://twitter.com/fbnewsroom/status/1183162508846215168?s=21 …
