Earlier this month, I wrote about how search results on Facebook were dominated by anti-vaccine misinformationhttps://www.theguardian.com/media/2019/feb/01/facebook-youtube-anti-vaccination-misinformation-social-media?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other …

The sprawling network of closed Facebook groups spreading pseudoscience is difficult to police because Facebook creates screening tools for these groups to keep those with dissenting views outhttps://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/feb/12/facebook-anti-vaxxer-vaccination-groups-pressure-misinformation?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other …

This means that when a parent shares details of denying basic healthcare from their feverish child in favor of, say, CBD Gummies, parents are met with affirmation of their choices instead of concern. On Friday I reported that Facebook actually has an ad-targeting category for ~900,000 people interested in “vaccine controversies”https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/feb/15/facebook-anti-vaccination-advertising-targeting-controversy?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other …

This means Facebook knows who are the people susceptible to being persuaded that vaccines are ~controversial~ (their safety and efficacy certainly are not), and allows advertisers to bid for their attention.

In the past, Facebook has argued that counter-speech to anti-vaxxer propaganda is better than censorship. But one pro-vaccine advocate told me she is completely outmatched on FB by the money one anti-vaxxer has raised on GoFundMehttps://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/feb/15/facebook-anti-vaccination-advertising-targeting-controversy?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other …

She has a tiny non-profit and $50-100 per month to spend on Facebook ads. The admin of one large group has raised $80,000 over four years on GoFundMe, just for FB ads. Facebook profits either way. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/feb/15/facebook-anti-vaccination-advertising-targeting-controversy?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other …pic.twitter.com/o1EQpCHIZG

In 2017, after ProPublica discovered horribly antisemitic ad targeting categories, Facebook said it was building “guardrails”. It did not respond to my requests for comment on the antivaxx categories.https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/feb/15/facebook-anti-vaccination-advertising-targeting-controversy?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other …
