Why does my email automatically filter out my math listserv emails but let through "One last chance to transform the way education works" from some predatory publishing company? Also, do I care enough to actually set filters to make this right?

Very proud of my student, who made major technical contributions to this new paper on infinitary commutativity!

From this, you can build the "Hawaiian Pants" space!

Ronnie Brown shared this with me some time back and it's changed my life. If you're not using this to keep track of your citations, you're messing up.

My phone of 3 yrs died of natural causes today, which was upsetting. Tonight I went out and had a cigar and g&t in 65 deg weather only be distracted by my own thoughts. Pretty sure that was enlightenment. I'm sure I'll be tired of that crap by tomorrow when I pick up my new phone

I learned about the partition and Brauer monoids for the first time today at the UPenn Deformation Theory seminar. A bit combinatorial for my personal taste but the diagram calculus is so cool!

I'm still communicating with Iranian topologists in respect and kindness despite the current political madness. I hope the nsa scanning the emails learns something about homotopy groups.

Advice to new math authors that should be obvious but apparently isn't. Write things in your own words! I've had multiple instances of authors copying sentences from introductions of my papers word for word🤨It's easy to recognize your own writing

After taking a little break from research, I have a full day tomorrow to work. Do I turn a mostly-finished project into a paper or spend all day on a shiny new problem that's caught my eye?

Meet the Hawaiian mapping torus - the mapping torus of the shift map. First singular homology is infinite cyclic generated by inner loop. Can you find the non-trivial elements of H_2? If you look at the image, it might feel H_2 is trivial since there is no "enclosed space!"
