To the many people who have said this isn't the only path, management is evil, whatever: of course it's not the only path. This wasn't meant as some edict defining the One True Way. It was a thought that occurred to me in the shower while reflecting on my own career so far.

This would be an awesome structure for a book. Each chapter would be How to X and start with, “If you aren’t doing X yet, that’s fine. Come back and read this chapter in a couple years.” It would be a valuable reference throughout an engineer’s career.

This exact book exists! The Manager's Path. I highly recommend. Really good read

I think this is where I have to admit that I haven't read Camille's book. Still, it is not a surprise to learn that we have similar mental models for career development in software...we did work together very closely for a year.

Open office plans are a grand conspiracy perpetrated by accountants and architects to impede all five stages.

I vehemently reject the notion that the only path of growth and progression for a software engineer is fucking management.
-
Is that an adjective or a verb? Asking for a friend.
-
both (depending on if You're cumming or going) :-|

This is the manager's path. There is another path: technical IC's path. In that, you get deeper and deeper in your coding and design skills and solve progressively harder problems.
-
This is also the path of some of the best technical ICs I’ve worked with in my career. It’s especially impressive considering they do it without any direct management authority.
@cbusick -
Sorry, really dumb question... what’s an IC?
-
IC = individual contributor. someone who does not have direct reports (but can still show leadership qualities)
-
Thank you.

I don't want to imply that you are suggesting there is not, but just for others who might be reading, theres also career development which doesn't lead to management. One can remain an indv. contributor and still have career growth.

That’s “a path”, not “the path”.

Now, if there weren't so many that stopped at step 2. Even if you change *professions*, there is no need to stop!
-
It's completely fine to stop at step 2. Being an IC is a legitimate career path. Not everybody has to go into management or leadership.
-
Very true. I just see too many people reach level two, then decide "Enough!" and turn into ones I don't want to be around.
-
I haven't reached level two yet but I know I don't want level 3.

I just finished my first pass through The Manager's Path. So much good info/knowledge throughout! Loved the format. Great read, even as an IC/informal lead on a *small* team.
I must recommend to any current/aspiring leaders in tech
