Facebook, Equifax, Wells Fargo, et al, remind me that the idea of leadership/doing the right thing/etc. as the smart business thing to do remains a contested concept. This is frustrating, at best, and deeply damaging to many people's lives, at worst.

If you want virtue in business, replace the quarterly earnings report with something longer term. CEOs do dirt for the same reason we all do: It gets them what they want in the moment.
