Is there any pre-20th century equivalent of the phenomenon of building massive stadiums for weeks of use and then leaving them to crumble?
I suppose those were intended to be temporary, but they're still pretty extravagant for their times

I guess what strikes me about stadiums is that they are enormous works, NOT intended to be temporary, the re-use plans always fail, etc.
