INBOX: seeking expert for media thing about #EVERGIVEN ME: I'm not the maritime industry insider you need. DETAIL: In college I briefly had the ambition to become a captain. Read the materials & crewed summers (e.g. tall ships) to build sea time for a license. Then moved on.

UPDATE: Help on the way for #EVERGIVEN. Dredging & heavy lift experts Boskalis have a team steaming towards the "very heavy whale on the beach"* & expect to arrive Thursday AM. CEO: could take days, or weeks. *Google translate... Story: https://nos.nl/nieuwsuur/artikel/2374006-boskalis-topman-vlottrekken-containerschip-kan-dagen-tot-weken-duren.html …pic.twitter.com/1T6cwiiLr5

It can take days to weeks for the ship to refloat at the Suez Canal. That said Boskalis CEO Peter Berdowski in Nieuwsuur .

A Boskalis team is currently on its way to Egypt to help with the recovery. They arrive at 4 a.m. on Thursday morning. "There they check how the ship is. They go on board themselves." At the same time, as much technical information as possible about the ship's ballast is collected. Information is also collected via satellite. "One team is flying, the other is already calculating", says Berdowski.
This is not an Amsterdam-Rhine Canal where you have the same depth over the entire width. You are dealing with an avenue in the middle that is up to 25 meters deep, but soon after that it goes to 15 meters, to 11 meters, and then even less to the ends. The ship is 15.7 meters deep. Certainly at the front the ship is a meter on the slope. "

You can see from the rusty brown underside in the photo below that the ship is really rising. "It's a very heavy whale on the beach, so to speak."
There are 20,000 fully loaded containers on the ship. "That means that an enormous weight is on the sandbar, both at the front and the back."

What exactly needs to be done, says Berdowski, has yet to be investigated. "The first thing you do is calculate. But you do come to the conclusion that it is not really possible to pull loose. That has become clear today."

According to Berdowski, water and oil can be removed from the ship to lose as much weight as possible. Containers can also be removed from the ship and dredged. For example, the ship must come off the bottom.

"But the more secure the ship is, the longer an operation will take. It can take days to weeks. Also consider bringing in all the equipment we need, that's not around the corner."

If this were a children's story, all the big tugs would pull and pull, but the ship wouldn't budge. Then the littlest tug of all would come along and say, "I've got an idea! I'm small enough to get to the other side and push." All the big tugs would scoff at this and go on pulling, ignoring the littlest tug. So the littlest tug would squeeze and squeeze and get around to the other side, and then give a push with all its heart. And the ship would be freed.

$1 billion 💵💵 -Compensation Egypt expects to seek for the #SuezCrisis. Not specified: whom they would seek it from. Story: @TTablawy @MiretteMagdy7 https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-01/egypt-may-seek-1-billion-in-compensation-for-suez-canal-crisis …pic.twitter.com/Y4mnb6LtOr

Egypt said it may seek around $1 billion in compensation after a giant container vessel blocked the Suez Canal for almost a week and roiled shipping markets.

The figure is a rough estimate of losses linked to transit fees, damage to the waterway during the dredging and salvage efforts, and the cost of equipment and labor, the Suez Canal Authority’s chief executive officer, Osama Rabie, said late Wednesday to local television channel Sada Elbalad.

He did not specify who the Canal Authority would seek compensation from.

“This is the right of the country,” Rabie said, adding that the incident hurt Egypt’s reputation. “This country should get its due.”
