Many programs don’t teach critical aspects of professionalization, such as writing an abstract. Yet grad students are expected to (almost required to) attend conferences and engage with academia outside of the classroom.

This doesn’t seem entirely fair to me. Grad programs should teach these components of academia in classrooms, especially because conference are mandatory on CVs for the job market.

Grad programs have an ethical responsibility to prepare those PhD students who wish to pursue academia. A part of this responsibility is to teach writing like abstracts.

I don’t wish to demean any grad programs or academics whom I admire (all of y’all are dope). I also don’t have some grand sweeping statement to make. I just have thoughts and feelings about it all bc I want to be successful in academia.

I had a wonderful professor in my MA program who had writing an abstract for a paper as an assignment in class. And we had to meet with her and revise and revise and revise until she officially improved it. And then we wrote the conference paper, and then the journal article.

I think that this should be the case in more graduate classes.
