would having a http://build.rs property declaration help?
For example, have a build script declare:
- It is building a c library known as "libfoo"
- It is doing codegen based on files in folder/ outputting to $OUTDIR
- it is doing something crazy/impure
That would help a lot. I think splitting it into distinct "generate code from other files contained in this crate" vs "I have a deps on a non-rust thing" roles is the obvious first step. First is hermetic, second is coupling with ext environment.
