Congrats to everyone who has totally crushed it this decade, a la this great @TheStalwart tweet:https://twitter.com/TheStalwart/status/1212046978865139712 …

Everyone on Twitter's like "Good riddance, what an awful decade... also this decade, sold my first startup, got married, three of my portfolio companies had exits, had twins, ran marathons on three continents"

Jokes aside, it’s fantastic how many have accomplished so much this decade. Before New Year’s begins, I want to offer a slightly different perspective.

Since 2009, I’ve been fortunate enough to achieve some conventional markers of success. But as the decade ends, those aren’t the accomplishments in which I take the most pride.

For reasons not appropriate for public discussion, the predominant feeling I have at the end of this decade is pride in having muddled through. In crises averted, keels kept even, status quos maintained.

And that is my great accomplishment for this decade. It wouldn’t have been my first choice at decade’s outset, but it could have been so, so much worse.

So my New Year’s message is that muddling through may not make for the most inspiring social media post, but if that is what the moment calls for, there is pride and glory in it.
