As somebody who initially recoiled at the original WaPo image but has come to appreciate the idea of connected scatterplots - a big issue was just a lack of familiarity. I think this side by side view helps a lot to bridge that gap for anybody else new to this style.

It’s not immediately clear where the series starts or ends + the clusters of overlapping points are confusing. All of this costs the reader time and brain power. Consider if this connected scatterplot was animated (each point and connecting line revealed 1 at a time).
