The Amazon news cycle suffered from similarly misleading maps. Both instances are heartbreaking and newsworthy without embellishmenthttps://twitter.com/NickEvershed/status/1213982781623033856 …

You point out one big challenge of creating #maps for informational purposes. Some times the icons are so large that they cover most of the map. My map showing youth programs in #Chicago has same distortion. If we zoom into sections of the city these icons would be not so dense.pic.twitter.com/kOfqcTLNW5
Whilst I totally agree with the point about gridded vs actual data, it should be noted that the link you’ve posted is from Dec 9, and only shows fires from Nov 1 - Dec 5. By far the biggest fires have happened after Xmas. Bottom line - the burnt area is massive.
A comparison map December 5 to January 5 would be very welcome!
This map is already out of date. Missing the big southern fires like the gippsland blazes
Still shows a lot of the fires in northern Australia that are just the routine, annual fires every dry season across the top end, mainly lit by Aboriginal land owners. It distorts the picture for those unaware that these are not fires that damage environment, property or people.
