The many allegations in D.C. include a child with intellectual disabilities punched the face while she was being restrained, causing vomiting and loss of consciousness, and a nonverbal, autistic child grabbed by the throat and thrown into a bookcase.

Most states strictly regulate seclusion and restraint. Not D.C. A national advocacy group found that D.C. has less protections for children than just about any state in the country.

And there's no transparency. Parents don't have to be told. And the only available data is what's reported to the federal government—but we found good reason to think that one source of information can be false.

Also, to understand why records matter and how badly this can go wrong in places with far more regulations than DC, read this from
@JennyAbamu about Fairfax https://wamu.org/story/19/03/13/children-are-routinely-isolated-in-some-fairfax-county-schools-the-district-didnt-report-it/ … and this from@jsmithrichards@jodiscohen@lakeidrachavis about Illinoishttps://features.propublica.org/illinois-seclusion-rooms/school-students-put-in-isolated-timeouts/ …Prikaži ovu nit

Thank you so much for this. I'm a professor who works with Disabled Kids of Color-can you point to where the statement "every single student restrained or secluded was a person of color" comes from? Was that specifically in DC? I can't find the numbers but want to highlight.

Thank you for elevating it! And of course—it was specifically in DC, and the data is available here: https://ocrdata.ed.gov/DownloadDataFile …. It's structured strangely, so it takes a little work to get the aggregate numbers, but feel free to DM me if I can help in any way at all.
