Arthur Chu added,
A personally informed dragging is always more convincing though
It is all of a piece, though. It doesn't surprise me it got bad reviews bc the whitewashing reveals a basic cluelessness
If you put any deep serious thought into "What does this character represent?" the whitewashing issue is front and center
If they somehow miss that then, well, looks like they didn't think it through
The original whitewashing set them up for this fall. If it had been an Asian character to start with the need for thought would be obvious
Just like they saw Jessica Jones and Luke Cage and were all "This clearly means something to ppl and we better not fuck it up"
"Think of the bad press if the 'woman' show and the 'black' show get terrible reviews, we better hire ppl who know shit"
Let's just pretend the kung fu thing doesn't exist - what is Danny? He's the other white guy, the rich one who isn't disabled
Fuck that was NEVER gonna be a popular character unless you changed something or the actor was superhumanly charming
I wonder if they should have gone with Shang-Chi but then realised even he is problematic
