I am exploring how to make programs more malleable and computing more humane. I have sketched some early thoughts on my blog. If you'd like to hear more and/or think this is crazy, please let me know, as any feedback helps! 😁

Exciting to see for Matrix is enabled by default! (developer version only so far) They seem to have really thought a lot about how this will avoid issues seen in other protocols. Multi-device cross-signing, searching, better ux, bots, scaling, etc.

It's so maddening when we can't copy from a program. If you can't copy and paste it's not really your computer. At the very least some way to export data is required. Owning a computer can be defined by freely composing the programs that can run in it.

there's a learn-to-code argument that, like, learning code gives you agency over your tech i'm uncomfortable w/ that argument, & i think "our data is stuck in apps" is why: no matter how skilled a programmer you become, you still won't control many apps. it's a structural issue

Frantic final preparations for demos are under way... if you want to see the grand reveal for cross-signing, QR verification and enabling E2EE by default, head to K-building auditorium at 4pm on Sunday!

I was working on some `:visited` styles, and couldn’t figure out why the alpha of my `hsla()` was being ignored. I moved it to `opacity` and it still was ignored… but Firefox reminded me WHY it was being ignored. Thank you, Firefox! I had somehow forgotten about those limits.

A screenshot of the Firefox Web Inspector. Next to a grayed-out `opacity: 0.1;` is a lowercase 'i' in a circle. Above that, a popup says: “It’s impossible to override opacity due to :visited restriction.” This is followed by a “Learn more” hyperlink.

if i wanted to write software to last as far into the future as possible, i would probably write it as an NES or Game Boy ROM

Join us at the PPIG 2020 workshop hosted by in Toronto to explore the margins of programming. Who has agency to participate in computational creativity? What practices, theories, people, and technologies have been overlooked?

Anyone know of more speculative visions for operating systems like these?: Especially keen to discover visions for mobile operating systems.

I just did my very first 'for real' E2EE cross-signing device verification on Matrix with - and now I magically trust his other devices, and he magically trusts the three of mine that i've verified too! IT IS COMING...

My theory for unblocking progress is inventing something that is both valuable and unmonetizeable. It needs to contain a poison pill for Silicon Valley. E.g. integrated github+npm equivalent but P2P so no servers, so no surveillance and ads.

The moderate popularity Max/MSP / Pure Data enjoy is because they let people make art. So perhaps "make money" is too narrow — too Valley — and the take instead should be "make something valued".

It's 2020 and I'm designing language features to make text parsing easier. How is this not a completely solved problem? How are people OK with regular expressions? Am I insane or is everyone else?

I wonder how this will change with the rise of subscription-based software.

Funny how one of the best educational platforms for kids is... pirated software. From Photoshop to Fruity Loops, feels like almost everyone got started as a teenager with a keygen.

thinking about how the Apple Lisa let you have multiple files with the same name in the same folder because why not? you can distinguish them by putting them in different spots in the folder!

can’t believe i missed this article by . telling people they need to learn CS to accomplish anything meaningful on their computers is like telling them they need a phd in materials science before they start a woodworking project. and our tools are built that way, too
