Sad if this is Colin Powell’s legacy. His UN speech on Iraq’s alleged WMD in Feb 2003. “My colleagues, every statement I make today is backed up by sources, solid sources. These are not assertions. What we’re giving you are facts and conclusions based on solid intelligence.”

So many concerns about the takeover of NUFC. Adam highlights one here; after publishing chilling book Killing in the Consulate, about the life and murder of Jamal Khashoggi, I’d point to that too.

People arriving on Kingsdown beach this morning. They said they were from Iran and Iraq. Some small children and families, and a lot of young men. 25 to 30 in total.

Another winner from the Saudi purchase of Newcastle Utd - the Saudi Ambassador, Prince Khalid bin Bandar al Saud, whose wife Lucy is a niece of the Duke of Northumberland. Beaufront castle, her family's home, is a 35 minute drive from the Newcastle ground.

A good day for bankers, lawyers, football agents, player salaries, many NUFC fans, the Saudi state. A bad day for anyone who thinks some state sponsored crimes are so reprehensible that sport should stay away.

Er, Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy. To quote Louis IV, ‘l’etat, c’est moi’. There is no separation of powers.

Put in context. The Saudi coalition has carried out 62 air raids on sports facilities in Yemen including 36 on stadiums, killing at least 16 civilians in the process, 3 of them children - Some of the 18,625 civilian casualties in Saudi's air war

Why was the phone of Jamal's Dubai-based wife targeted with NSO spyware in 2017 and 2018 and was Dubai involved? Why was Jamal's wife held under house arrest in Dubai for 10 days? Why was Jamal barred from the UAE when he attempted to visit and told to return to Saudi Arabia?

More questions for Sheikh Mohammed of Dubai: Why did a Gulfstream jet carrying some of Jamal Khashoggi's killers fly from Istanbul to Dubai en route for Riyadh in the early hours of Oct 3rd 2018 and was it carrying Jamal's body?

At 1.14pm today 3 years ago, Jamal Khashoggi disappeared inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. His body has never been found. There has been no justice worthy of the name. RIP Jamal - and all journalists killed in the pursuit of speaking truth to power.

Very sorry to hear today of the death of Geoff Hill. A great swashbuckling journalist in the best tradition of and a lovely man with it. Condolences to his family and shellshocked colleagues.

Thinking today of the 61 Eurobrokers employees who lost their lives on and around the 84th floor of the second World Trade Center tower. I made 2 films with the survivors not long afterwards alongside . The chief executive was in tears. I was holding back my own. RIP.

Happy memories of our September 10th report back in 2001. On September 11th itself, I was down to do the lead story for from the TUC conference in Brighton. Until I was told to forget it and catch a train back to ITN.

“Over the horizon” CT is a myth w/o eyes & ears on the ground. W/o Embassy, bases, allies, CT is hobbled. Presence & force apply fundamentally in CT. A lesson learned painfully after the 2011 withdrawal from Iraq. It will become evident again in Taleban-controlled Afghanistan.
