I love Super Bowl statistics. (“No team that has failed to convert at least 35% of their 3rd downs has gone on to win” etc.) They are the best introduction to p-hacking that can be found outside major journals.

How do we make Silicon Valley more inclusive? Maybe the answer is to start somewhere else. I’m excited to announce , a new initiative to develop inclusive tech hubs in three U.S. cities over the next five years.

As has pointed out, this is a problem in the media as well, where they often don’t give readers context for large numbers, making things like food stamp spending seem way larger than it actually is

Your annual reminder that Dr. King believed in guaranteed universal basic income that gave all people a dignified life, guaranteed housing for all, guaranteed access to a high quality education, & said that “no one should be forced to live in poverty while others live in luxury.”

Things like this really put the lie to almost everything we like to think about how successful folk become successful.

This article is a nice example of the challenges of research: multiple measures, multiple explanations, results changing on re-analysis, complex systems, and everyone thinking their own experience reveals the truth

If you work as a developer and don't have a college degree, I'd love to hear the story of how you got your first job! What convinced employers to take a chance on you? (RT for reach? ♥️)

I've seen all this before. Oilers lead 35-3 midway through the third quarter and lose 41-38 in overtime for those calling this the biggest choke job in history. That was a 32-point lead in the third quarter, not 24 in the second. I've been a witness to NFL history.

It’s grad admissions deliberation time. Here, I offer a few suggestions from my research for constructive, candid discussion that can advance equity goals directly and/or create a healthy group dynamic around controversial matters: 1/n

We kept SAT and GRE when the advantage went to the white kids. Now that the advantage is going to the Asian kids, schools are talking about getting rid of them.

If 1024 fair coins are each tossed 10 times, chances are good (> 63%) that at least one will come up heads 10 times in a row; and that coin will be proud to explain how its skill, faith, guts & determination made its achievement possible, and how that combo can work for you too.
