My longtime dental hygienist just got into the Iowa Writers Workshop. But she didn't know how prestigious it is until after she was accepted. The reason she applied? They give good health insurance, and her current plan's deductible was killing her. What a world, what a world!

That’s the important thing. In this climate, we can’t afford a cavity.

OK, so people, including people at Iowa, are raising questions about this story. I can tell you that this is how I heard it from her, but it IS possible that I misconstrued some of the details. I have emailed her for clarification ... stay tuned!

UPDATE: I heard back and I do need to make a correction. It's a bachelor's in Creative Writing at Iowa, not the MFA. She said "Iowa creative writing program" and I said "Iowa Writers Workshop??" and she said "uh huh." A miscommunication ... that blew up to 11k likes. Yikes.

She has writers imposter syndrome. Of course she’s gonna downplay it, especially if you complimented her. Also, hopefully you know that being a dental hygienist doesn’t preclude her talent. Signed, a 47 Year Old MBA Who Became a Writer After 40

You put into words the feelings I couldn’t describe. Thanks for addressing the underlying ~tone~ here.

Huge for one tweet that ended up being wrong! Well, screw it, carve it on my tombstone anyhow. Great to hear from you! All is well over here. Hope things are good with you too! Go Pelicans.

The answer to that involves personal stuff that I can't share on here.
