Last night was good. No breakdowns, fair weather. I even got more data for myself and ! Now for the raw reduction...

And for authors it means that any early mistakes that referees point out will now be public. Could be damaging, particularly for early career researchers. 2/

Lots of chat about the idea of making referee reports public. I'm torn. I worry it might deter referees from asking 'stupid' questions (which often turn out to reveal a host of troubles!) and increase odds of them being identified. 1/

I know very little about US politics but I'm struck by the age profile of the top 4 Dem nominees (in terms of betting odds): 78, 77, 77, 70. Trump is already the record holder for being the oldest first-time president at 70 and a bit. People are clearly keen on experience!

Observers: Here’s a wild result that nobody could possibly have anticipated, & which turns our thinking upside down. Theorists: It’s true that we hadn’t previously predicted this. But on further thought, it’s not only explained by our models, it’s required by them!

The Auxiliary Telescope spectrograph made its first observations of astronomical objects this week on Cerro Pachón! This "first light" images represents real, usable data for Rubin Observatory, and is the results of years of hard work by lots of people

the mood within the Labour Party right now is like the weekly scene in The Apprentice where the losing team goes to a greasy spoon cafe and all blame each other in a miserable fog of hindsight and suspicion
