This works for all sorts of assignments, too. @jlpasley once joked that a good way to study for comps would be to distill every book on your list to a tweet. I have done this with students. It is hard, but forces you to clarify the argument.

In my intro-level courses, I stick with 750-800 word papers. More, shorter writing assignments lets students iterate and improve more, but it also forces them to get to business as you say. I've ended up using 800 or 1200 words because it's a publishing standard.
Which is a handy thing to be able to tell students, "this is a real world writing format that really exists outside of the academy. This paper is the equivalent of writing an 800-word op-ed or a 1200-word think-piece."
