I've been using it for local development since that's the easiest for me to justify spending time on it, but there's a *lot* of surface area that is immensely useful once you grasp the concepts.

I've been known to describe it as "a virtual environment for your shell" to Python people, but it's certainly not Python specific. Think: your shell/execution environment has only the packages you need for a given project, and it has all of the right versions.

I'm interested, but can you give a real-world example of a problem solved by Nix? I don't think I've ever run into an issue where installing one package broke another one. Am I just incredibly lucky and this happens a lot to other people?

One problem it reliably solves for me is setting up a development environment with multi-language dependencies. It can launch a subshell with PATH or other environment variables set so that everything is in scope, and make it go away when I exit.
