We actively harm people, whether it’s out of a sick sense of justice or just indifference, then we dump them back onto the streets with no way to live a normal life and wait for them to come back again. It’s utter madness.

At some point we have to stop looking at people who have committed crimes as some kind of weird, dangerous species. Once someone is branded as a criminal their life is effectively over: can’t get a job, can’t rent an apartment, then we all stare in disbelief when they reoffend.

Solving our prison industrial complex is much bigger than freeing one person. It’s about fundamentally changing how we view our carceral system. We cannot dehumanize the same people we claim to want to rehabilitate.

Alice Johnson deserved to be free. As a country, we should be eager to address mass incarceration on a systemic level, so many more people like Ms. Johnson can return to their families and communities. Our cultural is sick & obsessed with locking people up and throwing them away.

Cancel student debt, don't cancel student debt. Whatever. But what everyone seems to forget when they're yelling about how stupid a bunch of 17 and 18 year olds were for taking out tons of loans for weird degrees from private colleges was THAT'S WHAT EVERYONE TOLD THEM TO DO.

So yeah, people should pay their debts. But acting like our society wasn't at least partially complicit in creating the student debt crisis displays a lot of ignorance of what actually happened in the last few decades.

Most people won't acknowledge this but the American people, both cons, mods & libs want more govt than they're willing to pay for. Lots of folks all over the political spectrum with their hands out yet not willing to pay more taxes. That's how you dig a 23 trillion dollar hole
