Google told me that if they’d been able to put a notch in the smaller Pixel 3 they would have and only didn’t because they didn’t have room for the cameras and the speaker in the narrower hardware. So it’s pretty safe to say this is the last year of notchless Pixels.

The way Google approached it is “people want more screen”, and right now the way to offer the most screen possible is with a notch. Period. Apple feels the same way. Agree or disagree, that’s the way it is.

Obviously we’re seeing companies like Oppo and Vivo introduce mechanical alternatives to the notch but I’d be surprised if Google is ever comfortable with that kind of solution given the long-term failure rates.

I don't quite follow...You mean that if they went with a notch design, there wouldn't have been room for the cameras and speaker because the screen would have taken up too much space?

The notch would have had to be even deeper. I think even Google has limits to how deep the notch goes.

Ultimately, I think I prefer the more balanced design of the smaller Pixel this year.

Sad times. Notch's are like cutting an odd shape out of you table so not quite a whole person can join dinner... Awkward and uneeded.

Notches are adding screen space that wouldn’t have otherwise been there. It’s like adding a side table to a smaller table.

And putting in a poor position, I understand that thier the only way around a machanical solution to the front camera. Just personally would rather have no notch and bit of bezel, but each to Thier own right
