Families have been strained, friendships broken. Hong Kong's future was once bright. High living costs began to weigh in recent years. But these days, people worry less about that. "Rather, they talking about whether Hong Kong is a place where you want to raise your children."
The protests have taken a toll on Carrie Lai, 45. She held back tears as we talked about recent protests. “I hate myself for being unable to join them at the frontline,” she explained. But, she added, “I just don’t see a future or a way out."
Marriage and starting a family are no longer topics that Edmond Chan, 29, and his girlfriend talk about. His role has changed from a math teacher to guidance counselor to students who can't talk at home. Yet he can't talk to his own parents who refuse to talk politics.
Ivan Lam, 24, returned after uni in the UK against the advice of family. It was home, he told them. These days he's less sure. We talked at a protest where he watched in dismay as an older man was suddenly shoved into a police van by riot police. "That's our future," he said.
"If you can afford it, leave," Ted Suen, 42, tells friends. Yet he is not willing to. He coordinates a network of volunteers that help protesters, ferrying them to and from protests and connecting them to medics.

The only people who thought HK’s future was bright over the last five years were those who were out of touch, there has been a slow ratcheting of pressure. Anybody trying to make rent on less than median wage certainly wasn’t thinking of a bright future
Also, this: “Peaceful demonstrations have turned violent.” You write so well in other areas yet fall into the same formulaic, overly simplistic sentence others describe protests with. Disappointing
