The gated community where Zhao grew up is the weirdest place, filled with terra cotta roofed McMansions. As @luzdingyu and I were walking around, we met an old granny out for a stroll. Her family had recently moved to the compound. "This place is strange," she told us.

‘Hard cash’ and not ‘hard work’
Apparently attending a prestigious boarding school in England is not enough to get one into a prestigious American university. Perhaps proof that prestigious education doesn't open all the doors that one might expect. Sometimes it takes cold hard cash to get ahead in life.
Also a bigger a factor is that Asians are white peoples preferred ethnic group followed by African Americans making their path to success easier.
She thought it was a donation -- I wonder if she thought it was weird that the president of president of Stanford didn't call to thank her for it. If I told a guy to give 6.5 mil to Stanford for me, and they didn't call to say thanks, let's just say I'd be following up.
