In Shenzhen and made a trip to a tiny footbridge that connects it to Hong Kong. Not many seem to use it anymore. But some 65 years ago it was the only way into China and my dad walked across it as one of the first reporters into what they called “Red China” at the time.

We talked to a dozen patient families. What we heard was sheer desperation. Some could only watch their beloved one die at home. Some patients had to walk hours to the hospital. Some patients had to wait in the hospital for 14 hours. The words came up most are 等 and 没办法。

China's death toll of 361 has now surpassed the total number SARS killed in the country. (The SARS stats may be unreliable though because China spent a lot of time covering up that outbreak)

  8. From one doctor who was initially silenced and is now in hospital with the virus: “If the officials had disclosed information about the epidemic earlier, I think it would have been a lot better. There should be more openness and transparency.”

  9. For those who have praised China’s response and transparency: It was only with the order from Xi that the bureaucracy leapt into action. At that point the death toll was three; in the next 11 days, it would rise above 200.

  10. Politics is No. 1. A damning look at how politics got in the way of stopping a raging virus. Human-to-human transmission by mid-Jan ignored, officials telling doctors to keep the word “viral pneumonia” out reports, a doctor silenced after speaking out

Just arrived in Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, which has been under lockdown for more than a week now. The mood among locals: anxiety, flashes of anger & frustration, and extreme boredom. Here I am getting my temperature measured in a hotel lobby.

The hashtag ’tComeToJapan. A headline of “Yellow Alert" in France. Signs saying Chinese customers not welcome. Fears of the coronavirus have fueled xenophobia that is outstripping practical measures to stop the outbreak.

Wow: head of Shanghai response says he's relieving all brave front-line docs working since Jan 1. Instead, he's sending in all members of the Communist Party, whose slogan is "We work for the people." Don't hide, he says: "You chant your slogans in normal times...now show me"
