It was a monument to UNC students who had fought and died in a war. They were absolutely on the wrong side of that war, but that does not make their courage or sacrifice any less. I would argue that the USA was wrong in Vietnam, but we should still honor the fallen from there.

Indeed. Nazis made sacrifices. Stalin's henchmen made sacrifices, many ended up dead. Yet, for some reason, it seems ridiculous to make statues for them. You can feel sympathy for their situations, but that's not what these statues from the Daughters of the Confederacy were for.
