2. From #Beijing to #Belarus, repressive regimes are often found abusing phone spy tech to serve political ends, esp when effective checks & balances are absent. Ever since the outbreak of #hkprotest last year, 4000+ #HKers' phones have been hacked by #hkpolice without consent.
3. As one of the victims, conversations in my phone were extracted and presented at court, w/ the scope of hacking left known. Under sweeping #nationalsecuritylaw, the world should be more cautious about how digital spy tools are now used in crackdowns of dissents in autocracies.
4. Worse still, under #China's rising #hostagediplomacy and the new law that covers foreigners, hacking tools can be used in diplomatic retaliation and silencing dissents. The issue is clearly more than just Cellebrite, but also all other digital forensics companies.
5. When digital authoritarianism reigns, repressive regimes do not only suppress with bullets and batons, but also surveillance and hacking. Solely in #Belarus, mobile hacking tools are used by long-time dictator #Lukashenko against freedom-seeking souls.
6. Justice delayed is justice denied. To protect personal safety & confidentiality of citizens, reporters & foreigners worldwide, we hope other digital forensic firms can halt phone hacking cooperations w/ repressive regimes, lest extracted info are used in crackdown on dissents.
