1/ EU’s move to ban the exports of police equipment is a reasonable and welcoming reaction when Beijing just imposed a sweeping security law that will be a Sword of Damocles over local dissidents. Shortly after its enactment, the law has already been misused.
2/ Possessing “Conscience” stickers, holding blank papers or even chanting a slogan of “Long Live Liverpool” were accused of breaching national security law. However, apart from its impacts on dissents, the law will have deadly implications for foreigners in the city.
3/ Ex-pats and travellers might face indefinite detentions, secret trials, covert surveillance, communication interception, warrantless raids of premises, asset freezes, or even extradition to China’s courts since the law covers European nationals working and living in HK.
4/ As our voices may not be unheard soon, we hope the EU could have a more comprehensive review of the human rights conditions and safety in HK.
