[The national security law is just the stepping stone for more political intervention by China.] 1/ Beijing treats “cyber and information security” as an indispensable component of its national security, according to China's “national security” narrative.
2/ President Xi stressed in 2014, "there will be no national security without cybersecurity.” When Beijing decides to rule with an iron fist, it is foreseeable that China will extend its censorship apparatus to HK. It doesn't exclude introducing more censorship apparatus in HK.
3/ According to the resolution passed by China’s top parliament NPCSC, Beijing’s national security-related institutions can set up branches in HK “based on needs. It means the proposed national security agency is just the first step for more China’s agency operating in HK.
4/ I will probably be the prime target of the new law since I have been arousing global awareness on the city’s democratic aspirations and human rights abuses on Twitter, Facebook and attending online conferences.
5/ If we take a glimpse into how Beijing uses the law in Mainland China, dissidents are subject to political prosecution on charges of inciting subversion for their online activities and speeches.
6/ Zhen Jianghua was charged on inciting subversion since he taught how to use VPNs and expressed support to HK protest. Since social media are the cornerstones of the protest, it is beyond any doubt that the new law will clamp down on all critical voices on online platforms.
7/ Draconian laws and barricades cannot stop our spirit of resistance. Although authoritarian China attempts to deal a deathblow to the city’s civil society, I am sure Hongkongers will have ways to circumvent China’s rigid cyber controls.
8/ In fact, throughout the HK movements, cyber activists play an essential role by inventing various apps like a real-time mapping app http://HKmap.live . When Beijing is reaching out its claws to the virtual world, the virtual world becomes the new battlefield.
9/ When the city’s cyber liberties are in the growing peril by China, I call upon the world, especially cyber activists worldwide, to stand with Hong Kong.
