They're not defunding them to Zero, they're slashing the budgets so the police only focus on serious violent crimes like you mentioned. Even "abolish the police" usually means dismantling the org and then rebuilding it to serve the community instead of acting like an occupation

Yeah, but that's not necessarily a good thing. If they replace with a new force, then it will be a good way to start over. If they don't replace it, there will be a lot of chaos. Many poor and disadvantaged people will be helpless. Hopefully they're smart about it.
