Feynman on the importance of philosophical understanding in science (same goes for pure math), & the importance of developing new viewpoints even when they haven't yet yielded new concrete results. What I've heard Benson Farb call the Triumph of Viewpoint.

About 10% of global CO2 emissions comes from combustion to produce large amounts of high-temperature heat for industrial products like cement, steel, and petrochemicals. But low-carbon options are scarce and expensive.

Hope certain funding agencies who rate network science as "not a priority area" have been watching this.

Or, as I sometimes like to say: "Some BS is just BS, but some BS makes good fertilizer." If you only allowed 100% correct maths from the start, you'd throw out all (or a lot of) the fertilizer! Some of that fertilizer starts out as rough ideas that are too rough to be formalized.

Central banks spent much of the last 10 years hauling their economies out of a deep financial crisis that began in 2008. They may well spend the next decade coping with the disruptive effects of climate change. By

Starting to put up YouTube lectures for "TCS Toolkit", a new course for PhD and advanced undergrad students with an interest in Theoretical Computer Science (TCS). Idea is to go over fundamental math and CS topics needed for basic research in TCS.

AI routinely produces startling achievements, but those advances require staggering amounts of computing power. As the damage caused by climate change becomes more apparent, AI experts are increasingly troubled by those energy demands.

Part of my move away from academia was due to the treatment of complex systems as "just another department" My long-held conviction is that complexity offers a frame that doesn't affect only how we do good science across all "departments", but how we *live* in the world.

It's called being a *theoretical* computer scientist. "Math vs CS" is a false dichotomy in so many ways!

7 Habits of Highly Effective Artists essentially all apply to mathematicians & algorithmists too! by . Watch for more nuance than the list below (e.g. the difference between good stealing & bad stealing, what kind of feedback to solicit, etc.)

Why do we use grades in middle school? My daughter’s best friend is giving up her dream of engineering at MIT at age 11 b/c of a C in 6th grade math. *This is the pipeline problem.* Every kid can learn this stuff. We should teach to mastery, not to evaluations.

PS Usual email courtesy applies, of course. You should probably start the email by introducing yourself. "My name is [name]. I'm a grad student in [topic/dept] at [school]. I'm interested in / working on [list up to 3 topics]." Or something along those lines.
