Of all the falsehoods this guy has told, being a US citizen would be the easiest to disprove. He's traveled internationally. If he has a US passport, then he's an American citizen regardless of his country of birth. If he doesn't, then all bets are off.

He might have dual citizenship since he would need a Visa to enter and stay in Brazil for more than a few months. Do we know his full name to search for his Brazilian records? Also, he could have become a citizen since he used to be married to an American woman.

If he were a US citizen, then wouldn't she have gotten citizenship with an anchor baby? She was here on farmworker visas and picked beans according to the story.Not impossible, but harder to do if pregnant. She may have gone back to Brazil, had the baby there, come back to work.
