Not sure how I had missed this before. Amazing analysis. And only about a third way through.

There is no doubt in my mind that the best writings of any U.S. President are Grant's memoirs, and his recollections of Lee's surrender in Appomattox---156 year ago this morning---are perhaps the best parts of those memoirs. pic.twitter.com/64P7snlEEU

US Grant is underrated. He was the target of systematic slander BECAUSE, he outwitted, out-gritted, and decimated the army of the Patrician Hero of the racist slave nation. Lee's hagiography required the personal destruction of the General who was greater than he.

Josh, I cut out the three paragraphs on writing and sent them to my freshman seminar. I have pounded those themes incessantly, but you encapsulated the ideas so ... concisely.

"it had not been demonstrated that an army could operate in an enemy’s territory depending upon the country for supplies." Was it? How did Napoleon's army survive when he overextended his supply lines?

Napoleon depended on looting Moscow for his army to survive. When he arrived and found it burned his adventures in Russia were finished as was his army.
