    This is true. It is also true that Sweeney was hated in parts of the White House, who have been pushing for his ouster since well before Mattis departed.

    Kevin Sweeney's departure from the Pentagon is neither a surprise nor particularly noteworthy. He was Defense Secretary Jim Mattis's chief of staff, not Acting Pentagon chief Pat Shanahan's. It's normal for someone in Sweeney's position to leave, too.

    Sweeney’s departure was expected. He was Mattis’ right-hand man, so we (or at least I and defense officials I talked to) expected him to step down after Mattis left. Not a surprise here.

    It is Jan. 5, 2019: we have no Secretary of Defense & now no DoD chief of staff, no Attorney General & no evident guardrails in Trump’s inner circle. The President is unhinged - even GOP zealots know it. Rs inside & outside the admin must stop enabling Trump & protect America.
