People like RMS have shaped the discourse and culture of things like FLOSS for a long time, and the more toxic aspects of their leadership trickled down. See @_sagesharp_ and @sarahmei for more insights om this.

Now OSS is ubiquitous. People can clone and fork projects in a fairly standard way, and a generation of programmers are simply used to having good, free tools available to them. Where does this leave "Free" vs "Libre" discussions, for eg?

Meanwhile, toxic folks like RMS or Linus Torvalds seem to be less, um, necessary for communities to thrive. Why put up with BS and exclude so many bright folks?
