Some of the best designers I’ve worked w/ had 0-2 yrs of experience. They’re curious. They question old patterns. They break rules. They’re open to trying new ideas. They’re hungry to learn. They quickly get better over time. They’re flexible. Don’t just hire Sr Designers.

You just described a good designer, regardless of experience. Any good senior designer with a lot of experience should be identical. Actually, they must posses these traits even more than an inexperienced designer.

Agreed, though Sr Designers typically carry many other responsibilities that *may* limit the opportunities to fully utilize these traits. Add more juniors to the mix, and you can elevate these good natural strengths onto a team. Add in some good mentorship and everyone wins.

Makes me question why people lose these attributes over time? We need an environment that is supportive, safe, and encourages playful, creative problem solving to keep them.

I don't think everyone loses these attributes over time, but sr level roles may become less accommodating to use them. Given they are more responsible for the outcome & performance, I feel some resolve to doing what they know to limit risk. Good ones will still find ways though.
