Hey #Archaeology twitter. I had a question in my class today about non-fieldwork/non-super physical jobs in archaeology. Can people please reply with examples of what they do please? #Archaeology4All

Great examples here thanks everyone, this went further than I thought it would. I think it is important to show that our field is developing and broader than it was and is portrayed as in popular culture. There's so much work to do we need all the help we can get!

Hey! It turns out that computer modeling is super useful for archaeology!https://simulatingcomplexity.wordpress.com

The question is whether computer modelers and data analysts in archaeology need substantial fieldwork experience, and whether they will eventually become independent professions? As far as I know, most people who do archaeological modeling or data analysis are archaeologists.

May I ask a related question? Is it possible to be an archaeological theorist without being an archaeologist in strictly academic sense? Keep in mind one can be a film theorist w/o being a filmmaker, a feminist w/o being a woman, an anthropologist of Java without being Javanese.

I don't see why not. So long as the literature is engaged with.

I mean, I don’t know if everyone considers what I do archaeology, but government/policy jobs involve a lot of site visits without the physicality. Plus the work with writing policy and guidance is really fulfilling and exciting

Material culture studies! e.g. lithic analysis (what I did for my PhD) but also work on pottery, glass, etc. Can do a lot of good work on chronology without leaving your desk. Lab work varies but a lot of it isn't super physical.

Second material culture studies! I’m a glass specialist and haven’t had to dig for nearly 10 years. Only have when I chose to.
